Make sure that your topic is very broad, as you will be writing on the same topic throughout the semester. Gun violence has become part of everyday life in America. A Pew Research Center survey revealed that 44% of Americans knew a victim of gun violence, while 23% had been personally threatened with a gun. From 2008 to 2017, more than 342,000 individuals were gunned down in the US, translating to a victim every 15 minutes. Nevertheless, the gun violence crisis in America is not consistent, with rates varying from one state to another. For instance, some states have comparatively high rates of gun-related homicides and low rates of gun-related suicides, and vice versa in other states. At the same time, other states have high or low rates across the board. Gun-related death rates are highest in Alaska, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama (>18 per 100,000) and lowest in New York, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts (<5 per 100,000) (Hemenway & Nelson, 2020).
